Pokemon Go is celebrating its ninth anniversary with a special event running until July 6th. During this event, players have the opportunity to catch the rare “coin hunter” Pokémon, Gimmighoul, which is usually hard to find. You can encounter Gimmighoul by completing research tasks, and there is even a chance to find its shiny form.
To help you add this elusive Pokémon to your collection, here is a detailed guide on how to catch and evolve Gimmighoul. Also, check out our Pokemon Go July 2025 event guide for all the latest in-game activities.
How To Get Gimmighoul
There are two main ways to obtain Gimmighoul in Pokemon Go besides trading. The first is through the “Coin Bag,” an item you get by linking your Pokemon Go account with the Nintendo Switch versions of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The second way is by encountering Gimmighoul during special events.
1. Coin Bag
Similar to Meltan, Gimmighoul appears in Pokemon Go only when you use a specific item called the Coin Bag. To get the Coin Bag, you must link your Pokemon Go account with the Nintendo Switch game and send a postcard from Pokemon Go to your paired game. After this, the Coin Bag will be added to your inventory.
The Coin Bag works like the Mystery Box and is only active for a limited time. When opened, wandering Gimmighoul will appear in the wild for 30 minutes, giving you a short window to catch as many as possible. After 30 minutes, the Coin Bag closes, and you must wait a day and send another postcard to open it again.
2. Events
Besides the Coin Bag, Gimmighoul also appears during special events, such as the ongoing ninth anniversary party event (July 1-6). During this event, completing field and timed research tasks can reward you with encounters with Gimmighoul. These event Gimmighoul may carry special anniversary coins, making them extra rare.
How To Evolve Gimmighoul
Unlike most Pokémon that evolve with candies, Gimmighoul requires coins to evolve — and a lot of them.
Once you collect a staggering 999 Gimmighoul coins, you can evolve Gimmighoul into Gholdengo. You can gather these coins by catching wild Gimmighoul, spinning PokéStops with the Golden Lure Module, or setting Gimmighoul as your buddy and walking together.
Since Gimmighoul coins are usually hard to come by, collecting enough to evolve into Gholdengo may take some time. However, the ninth anniversary event makes it easier. When spinning PokéStops with the Golden Lure Module, you have a chance to receive 9, 99, or even more Gimmighoul coins. Don’t miss this opportunity if you want to get Gholdengo.
Does Gimmighoul Have A Shiny Form?
Not all Pokémon have shiny forms, but Gimmighoul does, and it’s easy to spot.
The regular Gimmighoul has a silver body, while the shiny form is white, making it instantly recognizable. The shiny Gholdengo is harder to distinguish; its body color remains the same, but its lines change from red to blue.
Remember, the Pokemon Go ninth anniversary party event runs until July 6th. After the event, you’ll need to rely on the Coin Bag to catch more Gimmighoul, so don’t miss your chance to add this “coin hunter” Pokémon to your collection.
