New Mario Kart World Patch Sparks Online Play Controversy

The recent release of Patch 1.1.2 for Mario Kart World on the Nintendo Switch 2 has stirred up frustration among players. This update brought minor tweaks to tracks such as Boo Cinema and Dino Dino Jungle, but it also introduced changes to the online multiplayer experience that many find unwelcome.

Players have reported that the patch has altered matchmaking preferences, favoring “intermission races” over the traditional three-lap races when playing online with friends. Intermission races require players to navigate an open map between tracks and then complete a single lap on the new course, which differs from the standard race format.

Previously, selecting the “Random” option before a race would reliably result in a three-lap race. However, since the patch, this option now more frequently leads to intermission races, much to the dismay of the community.

The backlash is evident on forums like ResetEra, where users express their dissatisfaction. Comments range from simple frustration to claims that Nintendo has “ruined online play” and is “diminishing the classic Mario Kart experience without justification.”

Mario Kart World remains exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. The official patch notes for version 1.1.2 include adjustments to course selection in wireless VS races, fixes for rate fluctuation display issues in online modes, and corrections for specific gameplay problems on Dino Dino Jungle and Boo Cinema tracks.

This patch highlights the challenges developers face in balancing new features with player expectations, especially in beloved franchises like Mario Kart.
