Nuclear Throne Receives Its First Major Update in Nearly Eight Years

Vlambeer has released a significant update for Nuclear Throne, marking the first major patch since November 2017. This update introduces support for 60 and 120 frames per second modes, a revamped controls menu, and various aspect ratio options. Currently, these features are available in the game’s beta build, with plans to roll them out to all players in the future.

The beta update was announced on Steam, including instructions on how players can access it. Vlambeer has assured that these enhancements, along with additional improvements, will eventually be integrated into the main game. Interestingly, the company hinted at physical versions of Nuclear Throne for the Nintendo Switch, which may suggest a potential update for the Switch 2 that supports 120fps gameplay.

Nuclear Throne is available on multiple platforms including PC, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox One, and Switch, having originally launched in Steam Early Access in 2013 and fully releasing in late 2015. The new beta improvements might also indicate upcoming versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, although no official announcements have been made.

The long hiatus in updates is partly due to Vlambeer effectively shutting down in 2020 after a decade of operation. However, nearly a year ago, co-founder Jan Willem Nijman reacquired the company name and revived Vlambeer. Nijman’s goal is to preserve classic Vlambeer titles and ensure their longevity. Besides Nuclear Throne, Vlambeer is also known for Ridiculous Fishing and is currently developing Ultrabugs.
