Former Naughty Dog Director Vinit Agarwal Leaves Studio to Launch New Game Development Studio in Japan
Vinit Agarwal, the game director known for his work on The Last of Us multiplayer projects, officially left Naughty Dog in July 2025. After a decade at the acclaimed studio, Agarwal announced the launch of a new game development studio based in Japan. This move follows the cancellation of The Last of Us online multiplayer game, a project he had been leading.
According to multiple industry reports and Agarwal’s own LinkedIn update, the new studio aims to focus on innovative multiplayer experiences, leveraging Agarwal’s extensive experience in narrative-driven and online game design. The decision to establish the studio in Japan reflects a strategic choice to tap into the region’s rich talent pool and vibrant gaming culture.
Naughty Dog confirmed Agarwal’s departure in an official statement, expressing gratitude for his contributions over the past ten years. The cancellation of The Last of Us multiplayer was attributed to shifting company priorities and a desire to focus resources on other projects.
This development marks a significant transition for Agarwal, who played key roles in Uncharted 4, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and The Last of Us Part II. Industry observers are keen to see how his new venture will influence multiplayer game design in the coming years.
