HBO Cancels J.J. Abrams’ Thriller Series ‘Duster’ After One Season

HBO has officially canceled the new thriller series “Duster,” created by J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, after just one season. The show, which starred Josh Holloway, known for his role in “Lost,” received critical acclaim but failed to attract a large audience.

Despite the cancellation, HBO expressed pride in the series and gratitude for the opportunity to work with the talented creators. “While HBO Max will not be continuing with a second season of ‘Duster,’ we are very proud of the show,” the streaming platform stated.

J.J. Abrams, famous for directing the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot and the “Star Wars” sequels “The Force Awakens” and “The Rise of Skywalker,” teamed up with LaToya Morgan to produce this highly praised thriller. The series earned a 92% critic score and 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it premiered in mid-May and did not manage to secure a spot on any viewership charts.

The official synopsis describes “Duster” as a story about a brave getaway driver working for a growing crime syndicate. The plot thickens when a determined young agent arrives in town, intent on dismantling the criminal family, leading to a dangerous and wild ride.

Josh Holloway reprised his role as the driver, marking another collaboration with Abrams, with whom he worked extensively during the six seasons of “Lost.” Holloway recently spoke about his temporary departure from the entertainment industry due to a lack of work, making “Duster” a perfect comeback project, especially as it was created with an old friend.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Holloway shared his disbelief upon receiving the “Duster” offer just before the pandemic and the subsequent two sales of HBO. Despite uncertainties, the team persevered, confident the show would not be canceled.

The series is not yet available on streaming platforms.
