World of Warcraft’s Original Plan: A Single-Player Offline Mode

Recently, a single-player MMO simulation game called “Erenshor” has caught the attention of many gamers. This game allows just one real player to team up and interact with hundreds of simulated players within an open-world MMORPG environment, offering the full experience of an MMORPG at one’s own pace. Currently, “Erenshor” is priced at 64.6 yuan on Steam and has received thousands of positive reviews.

Former Blizzard producer @Grummz recently used “Erenshor” as an example to discuss “World of Warcraft” (WoW). He revealed that WoW originally planned to include a single-player offline mode. This was because Blizzard was concerned that many players might not have stable internet connections or access to credit card payment methods at the time.

Today, “World of Warcraft” stands as one of the most successful MMORPGs worldwide. However, this early concept of a single-player offline mode invites reflection: what interesting scenarios might have emerged if WoW had launched with such a feature?
