Resident Evil 9 Returns to Its Roots: Focus on the Umbrella Corporation in Raccoon City

Capcom recently confirmed on the PlayStation official blog that Resident Evil 9 will mark a significant milestone for the series’ 30th anniversary. The new installment will bring the story back to the familiar setting of Raccoon City and refocus on the core narrative that has run through the series since the beginning — the mysterious and sinister Umbrella Corporation.

Since the release of Resident Evil 7 in 2017 and Resident Evil 8 in 2021, the series shifted its focus to the Winters family and standalone events. While these entries achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, they distanced themselves from the main storyline and classic characters. This time, Resident Evil 9, titled “Requiem,” will guide players back to the main plot, continuing the grand narrative of the franchise.

Producer Kazuhiro Kumazawa stated, “Resident Evil 7 and 8 expanded the series’ universe, but Resident Evil 9 aims to return to the roots set in Raccoon City, revolving around the Umbrella Corporation’s conspiracy.” He added that with the series celebrating its 30th anniversary, Raccoon City is the perfect stage for this theme.

Additionally, Requiem will introduce a new protagonist — Grace Ashcroft, the daughter of Eliza Ashcroft from the spin-off Resident Evil: Outbreak. Born after the destruction of Raccoon City, Grace’s fate is closely tied to the city, bringing fresh emotional depth to the story.

Kumazawa explained, “We wanted to introduce a character deeply connected to the city’s fate. Grace is different from traditional protagonists like Leon or Chris; she is more of an ordinary person who experiences fear and panic in sudden situations, making her the ideal choice to return to the horror roots of the series.”
