Disney has officially announced the development of a live-action sequel to “Lilo & Stitch,” following the successful release of the first live-action remake last month.
The announcement came via a playful Instagram video from Disney, featuring the beloved blue alien mascot driving around the Walt Disney Studios and drawing inspiration from the number “2.” Details about the plot, cast, or release date for “Lilo & Stitch 2” have not yet been revealed.
In a celebratory post on June 26, Disney wrote, “Should have known it couldn’t keep a secret. Surprise on 6/26: #LiloAndStitch2 is in development!”
The live-action “Lilo & Stitch” remake premiered on May 23, 2025, and quickly became a box office hit. Even before the film’s release, Disney was already considering a sequel. Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, expressed confidence in the film’s success and its potential for multiple sequels.
Surprisingly, the green light for “Lilo & Stitch 2” took some time despite the first film’s strong performance. Within a week of its premiere, the 2025 remake grossed $610.8 million worldwide, a figure that has since climbed close to the $1 billion mark, currently standing at approximately $914.4 million (source: Box Office Mojo).
Spoiler alert for “Lilo & Stitch” (2025):
The live-action remake’s ending differs significantly from the original animated film but sets the stage for the sequel. Lilo’s sister Nani leaves Hawaii to study marine biology out of state, leaving Lilo and Stitch behind. The closing scenes hint that with some alien technology, they may not be apart for long.
Additionally, the film features a scene with an alien computer screen displaying other famous experiments from the “Lilo & Stitch” series, including Experiment 624 (Angel), 625 (Reuben), and 627. These characters are likely to play important roles in the sequel, which has ample material for further installments. Notably, an animated direct-to-video sequel, “Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch,” was released in 2005.
Our review gave the 2025 live-action “Lilo & Stitch” an 8 out of 10, though not all fans were pleased with the ending. Some expressed dissatisfaction online about the new direction for Nani and Lilo, feeling it conflicted with key themes from the original.
