Xbox 360 Receives Unexpected Dashboard Update Years After Store Closure

The Xbox 360, a console originally launched in 2005, has surprisingly received a new system update recently. A Reddit user named trackwalker discovered that upon starting their Xbox 360, the dashboard had been updated.

Details about the update remain somewhat unclear. However, users on Reddit noted that game thumbnail images no longer appear stretched, improving the visual experience. Additionally, the dashboard now prominently features advertisements for the Xbox Series X|S consoles, encouraging users to upgrade and “experience next-gen performance.”

The Xbox 360 store officially shut down in July 2024, resulting in the removal of hundreds of games and related content. TrueAchievements reported that many store-related tiles were also removed, leaving the dashboard looking rather plain.

Despite the store closure, backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games are still available for purchase on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com. Online multiplayer support for Xbox 360 games depends on the publishers and developers and was not impacted by the store’s shutdown.

The Xbox 360 generation marked a significant success for Microsoft, with over 80 million units sold. In comparison, the Xbox One, released in 2013, sold fewer units, and the Xbox Series X|S has also underperformed relative to the Xbox 360. Currently, Microsoft is working on a new home console in partnership with AMD and is exploring new branded handheld devices like the upcoming Xbox ROG Ally. Additionally, Microsoft has teamed up with Meta to develop an Xbox-branded VR headset.
