Magic: The Gathering Movie Secures Power Rangers Writers for Screenplay

Hasbro’s Magic: The Gathering live-action film has made significant progress with the hiring of Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, the screenwriting duo behind the unproduced Power Rangers movie, to write the screenplay. Previously, BlackBerry director Matt Johnson was in talks to direct the film, but his involvement remains uncertain.

Gardner and Fitzgerald have notable experience, having worked on The Trench, a DC Extended Universe project intended as an Aquaman spin-off, and are currently collaborating on Trancers, a Prime Video original series based on a cult sci-fi film.

Magic: The Gathering, a leading trading card game for over 30 years, is owned by Wizards of the Coast, which also holds the rights to Dungeons & Dragons. Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary plan to launch a shared universe through the Magic: The Gathering film, expanding into movies and TV shows.

New video games for Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons are in development, though release dates are not yet announced. Hasbro has also been pushing D&D as a multimedia franchise, with the recent live-action film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves receiving positive reviews but modest box office returns. A live-action D&D series is also in production for Netflix.

Recently, Wizards of the Coast released a Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy collaboration set, which has become the franchise’s best-selling set and may have even resolved a mystery from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
