In 2020, the fan development team ArcForged launched Sonic Smackdown, a fighting game that brought together various characters from Sega’s iconic Sonic the Hedgehog series. Building on that foundation, ArcForged has now released an enhanced version called Ultimate Sonic Smackdown. This new iteration clearly draws inspiration from Capcom’s Marvel vs. Capcom franchise, as showcased in its announcement video.
Although this project is not officially affiliated with or endorsed by Sega, it boasts impressive polish for a fan-made game. Unlike the original Sonic Smackdown, which featured one-on-one battles, Ultimate Sonic Smackdown introduces 3-vs-3 tag team fights, adding a fresh layer of strategy and excitement.
The roster, while not as extensive as the original’s 17 characters, still includes fan favorites such as Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, Mecha Sonic, and Doctor Eggman. Players can customize their teams with one, two, or three characters, and the game supports rollback netcode for smooth online play.
As an unofficial fan project, Ultimate Sonic Smackdown is available for free on ArcForged’s itch.io page, making it accessible to a wide audience eager for Sonic-themed fighting action.
Meanwhile, Sega’s next official Sonic title, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, is an arcade racing game scheduled for release on September 25 across multiple platforms including PS5, PS4, Switch, Xbox, and PC. However, Sega has indefinitely postponed the release of its upcoming mobile game Sonic Rumble, which currently remains in pre-launch testing without a confirmed release date. Additionally, Sonic X Shadow Generation recently launched on Nintendo Switch 2 earlier this month, continuing the franchise’s presence on modern consoles.
