Female Players Face Harassment and Gender Violence in Red Dead Redemption Online

A 2023 study revealed that 75% of young women have experienced harassment while playing online games, leading many to mute their microphones and cut off social interactions for self-protection. However, the situation in Red Dead Redemption Online shows that even using a female character avatar can attract malicious attacks.

Reddit user Mingxia posted that “harassment against women in this game is real. After adjusting my character to a more traditionally attractive appearance, the harassment became extreme — cheaters forced embarrassing animations, legendary animal corpses spawned out of nowhere, and I was even tied up and dragged into a town hotel.”

Other users like sayooas and AriaX420 admitted to using cheats to fight back against abusers. More aggressive players like Andromedaaaa kicked offenders off servers or crashed their games, saying, “I have no guilt using cheats because I’ve had enough.”

Some players choose to change their character’s gender to avoid harassment, feeling that enduring endless abuse is not worth it. InkedAlchemist explained, “That’s why I use a male character and only voice chat with friends.”

Discussion threads indicate significant platform differences: PC players suffer the worst harassment, especially from cheaters. Console player Nuru_0 also shared similar experiences, being lassoed and dragged into a hotel just for being female, enduring inhumane treatment.
