Nintendo’s Clever Reveal: Pauline’s True Identity in Donkey Kong Bananza

Recently, Nintendo held a Direct presentation for their new game “Donkey Kong Bananza,” showcasing their prowess in 3D platform gaming once again. This event not only brought surprises but also confirmed long-rumored speculation about the true identity of Donkey Kong’s new companion, “Odd Rock,” who is actually a younger version of Pauline.

Although this major reveal was accidentally leaked months ago on Nintendo Korea’s official website, slightly lessening the shock of the official confirmation, it remains an exciting moment for “Donkey Kong Bananza.” It turns out Nintendo had cleverly hinted at Odd Rock’s true identity all along, but many players only realized it recently.

Twitter user DaNintendude shared a clip from “Donkey Kong Bananza” featuring Odd Rock’s appearance, which was previously shown during Nintendo’s Treehouse livestream. In the video, when Donkey Kong looks at Odd Rock, a background melody plays. DaNintendude pointed out that this musical theme is a variation of the iconic tune from the original “Donkey Kong” game, played during the rescue of Pauline.

This was clearly an intentional hint by Nintendo rather than a coincidence. Before the official confirmation, it might have seemed like a stretch, but now that Odd Rock’s identity as Pauline is confirmed, this musical Easter egg is delightfully clever.

Despite the initial leak suggesting Nintendo was not too concerned about the early exposure of Pauline’s identity, the fact that they subtly hinted at the truth for so long without most players noticing adds an interesting twist to the story.
