Onimusha: Way of the Sword – A Classic Approach to Swordplay in 2026

Capcom is set to release “Onimusha: Way of the Sword” in 2026, with director Satoru Nihei emphasizing a return to the series’ core gameplay rather than following current trends like open-world or Souls-like mechanics.

Nihei clarified that the game will neither be open-world nor a high-difficulty, death-retry style game. The goal is to make the game accessible to players who may not be skilled in action games, while still delivering an immersive sword-fighting experience.

The game introduces new mechanics to enhance the realism of sword combat, such as a “block” feature that drains the boss’s stamina and can trigger a “Break Issen” attack to destroy parts of the enemy. It also retains the classic soul absorption ability from previous titles.

Producer Akihito Kadowaki revealed that the story is unrelated to previous entries in the series. Players will take on the role of the legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi, inspired by the late actor Toshiro Mifune.

“Onimusha: Way of the Sword” will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms.
